It's tough for Australia to break new ground.

We're talking about the team that has won seven Cricket World Cups, in addition to an additional six T20 titles, and earlier maintained over three years without defeat in 50-over cricket.

The alternative records, targeted by the record chasers, are all that remain for a team that has won it all.

It needed until Sunday's victory by three wickets over India for them to achieve their initial ODI chase above 300, regaining their record for the highest in women's cricket's 50-over format, is, honestly, a tribute to the pitchers that have sported the yellow jersey over the last half-century.

It's difficult for their batters to maintain a record if never given the opportunity.

Ultimately, the result of Australia allowing 330 runs was captain Alyssa Healy being given a chance to produce her most recent brilliance.

That loss "drove us to reconsider our benchmarks," Healy commented earlier.

At the subsequent ODI World Cup in New Zealand, Healy hit 170 against England in the title decider and was awarded tournament MVP. She ensured her country would not fall short again.

If this newest brilliant performance exceeded that prior achievement is debatable.

Some will argue the reasoning behind the pressure of a final. Some might respond with the test that comes when pursuing an unprecedented total and a loud pro-India audience of 20,000.

What's definite is this hundred was considerably tougher to anticipate.

The New Zealand onslaught in 2022 occurred when she topped the run-scoring charts, but this innings was preceded by six games in India from the beginning of the previous month in which she had not exceeded 30 runs.

"If you've observed me in training, it's been a disappointing period because it appeared I lacked timing completely," said Healy.

"But once you take the field, your competitive instincts activate and you simply focus on the contest."

Healy's competitive nature has continuously been her great strength - and a priceless quality in taking over from iconic ex-skipper Meg Lanning.

She was challenged by India's promising player Kranti Gaud in the previous month's ODI series, fallen to the young fast bowler in each encounter, but on this occasion it simply offered Healy's spark.

A single came off Gaud's first delivery and from there the batsman was in motion.

"The possibility to go out there and lock in a contest with her and merely enjoy the moment in that regard, sort of got me going," stated Healy.

She got to fifty in 35 deliveries - her swiftest at the World Cup - and her ton in 84 as she attacked short-pitched balls, striking 21 boundaries and three maximums.

When she was removed her side needed 66 additional runs at one run per ball - an achievable target now requiring a leisurely stroll.

"Chasing 330 runs is new territory so I am glad we have the assurance to achieve that now," stated Healy further.

"Hopefully we don't have to do it another time but, if we do, we believe we can do it."

These statements will be the final thing Australia's opponents at this World Cup need to hear.

Over the past five days a feeling they will succeed regardless of circumstances has only strengthened - this triumph coming after win against Pakistan by 107 run margin despite sitting at 76-7 at one point.

Subsequently Australia meet Bangladesh before a meeting with longtime competitors England in Indore in 10 days, by which point a semi-final place may probably be guaranteed.

It was at that stage they exited the prior year's T20 World Cup in an unexpected loss by South Africa - an encounter Healy missed because of torn tissue in her foot as she captained her nation for the first time at an important competition.
