The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
